ECDA Launches Its First Diversity, Equity & Inclusion Working Group Meeting

The European Chips Diversity Alliance successfully hosted the first meeting of its Diversity, Equity & Inclusion (DEI) Working Group on 2 December 2025, marking an important milestone in the Alliance’s mission to strengthen inclusion across Europe’s semiconductor talent pipeline.

This meeting brought together partners from industry, academia, and research organisations. As the semiconductor sector faces significant workforce and skills shortages, DEI is a critical component for building a larger, more diverse, and future-ready talent pool.

How This Fits Into the European Chips Skills Alliance

The DEI Working Group is part of the wider structure of the European Chips Skills Alliance, an EU-wide initiative coordinated to strengthen the skills pipeline for the semiconductor and microelectronics sector.

ECSA brings together industry, universities, VET providers, research organisations, clusters, and public authorities to:

map skills needs across the value chain,
develop training and upskilling pathways,
coordinate national and regional efforts, and
build a long-term, diverse talent pipeline.

ECDA operates within this framework, ensuring that inclusion, equity, and representation remain integral to Europe’s skills and workforce strategies.

Purpose of the DEI Working Group

The working group will meet quarterly and serves as a collaborative advisory body, without formal deliverables, designed to enable open discussion and shared learning. It offers a space for partners to:

present their ongoing DEI initiatives,
exchange best practices and external perspectives,
explore cross-sector opportunities, and
receive peer feedback on challenges and new ideas.

Looking Ahead

As the Alliance continues to grow, SEMI Europe is working toward a long-term association model to ensure sustainability beyond EU project cycles. Inclusive Employer Branding training delivered at SEMICON Europa 2025

As part of SEMICON Europa 2025 in Munich, the European Chips Diversity Alliance (ECDA) delivered an in-person training session on “Inclusive Employer Branding Together”, bringing together professionals from across the microelectronics sector to explore how organisations can better attract and retain diverse talent.

Led by Stephan Schmuck from ESCP Business School, the session forms part of ECDA’s broader mission to strengthen diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) across Europe’s semiconductor ecosystem by equipping organisations with practical tools and strategies.

From employer branding to lived experience

The interactive training focused on moving beyond traditional employer branding approaches towards more authentic, inclusive practices that reflect employees’ real experiences. Participants explored how organisations can align their Employer Value Proposition (EVP) with everyday workplace realities.

Through collaborative discussions, hands-on exercises, and real-world examples, attendees worked together to identify practical ways to strengthen inclusion across the employee journey.

Key insights from the session

Mind the implementation gap
The biggest risk to retention is not a lack of strategy, but the gap between organisational promises and everyday employee experience. When values are not reflected in practice, trust quickly erodes.

Middle managers shape inclusion
Managers play a critical role in translating organisational values into day-to-day behaviours. Small, consistent “micro-interventions” can have a powerful impact on psychological safety and team culture.

Understanding Gen Z talent
Participants explored how younger talent prioritises authenticity, purpose, and transparency. Inclusive employer branding must reflect genuine organisational practices rather than performative messaging.

Inclusion happens in everyday moments
Inclusion is not defined by strategy documents, but by everyday interactions — from onboarding experiences to feedback conversations and team check-ins.

A collaborative learning experience

The session brought together a diverse group of professionals from across the semiconductor ecosystem, whose insights and experiences enriched the discussion and highlighted the complexity of building inclusive workplaces.

Participants engaged actively throughout the day, sharing challenges, exchanging ideas, and committing to practical actions to strengthen inclusion within their organisations.

Chosen from a strong pool of seven outstanding nominees, Cassandra was recognized by the Diversity in Chips Leadership Board as the standout candidate for this year’s award.

A passionate advocate for DEI, Cassandra has designed and led impactful initiatives across the ecosystem—including the SEMI Talent Forum, ChipQuest Challenge, NextGen Talent, and the PAS Gender Diversity Survey—creating equitable pathways into the industry and elevating DEI principles across Europe’s semiconductor landscape. She has also driven SEMI Europe’s efforts to make the industry more diverse and inclusive, while championing platforms where every individual feels valued, respected, and empowered to contribute.

Cassandra has played a pivotal role in guiding European Chips Diversity Alliance‘s strategic efforts to foster inclusive practices and strengthen Europe’s microelectronics talent pipeline. ECDA Co-Organises European Dialogue on Skills, Inclusion, and Semiconductor Talent in Brussels

The European Chips Diversity Alliance co-organised the event Accelerating Europe’s Tech Advantage: Union of Skills for Chips, Tech and Inclusion in Brussels on October 2nd, bringing together key stakeholders from across policy, industry, and education to address Europe’s growing semiconductor talent challenge.

Held in the context of the European Commission’s Union of Skills initiative, the event highlighted the urgent need to strengthen STEM education and align talent development with the evolving demands of high-tech sectors, including semiconductors. With projections indicating a shortage of over 75,000 roles in the semiconductor industry by 2030, discussions focused on how Europe can build a resilient and future-ready workforce.

Organised in collaboration with OECD, SEMI Europe, the EU STEM Coalition, and theEuropean Chips Skills Academy, the event featured keynote contributions and expert insights from leading voices across Europe. Topics ranged from the current state of STEM education to the impact of the talent gap on industrial competitiveness and innovation.

Laith Altimime, President of SEMI Europe, underlined the scale of the semiconductor talent challenge and the need for coordinated action across education and industry. Andreas Schleicher, Director for Education and Skills at OECD, provided a broader perspective on global education trends, while Beatrice Boots, representing the EU STEM Coalition, highlighted ongoing European-level efforts to strengthen STEM ecosystems.

A central panel discussion brought together Laith Altimime and Nessa Maguire (EudaOrg), alongside other leading voices, to explore the effectiveness of current STEM promotion initiatives – particularly in relation to the participation of women and underrepresented groups in high-tech fields. Moderated by Victoria Cummings from SEMI Europe, the discussion examined whether existing approaches are delivering measurable impact and how messaging, workplace culture, and education systems can better support inclusive participation in the semiconductor sector.

The discussion also addressed broader questions around Europe’s ability to remain competitive in key technological areas such as artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, and advanced manufacturing, all of which depend on a strong and diverse talent pipeline.

As co-organiser, ECDA played a key role in shaping the dialogue, reinforcing the importance of inclusive approaches to workforce development and the need to bridge gaps between education, policy, and industry.

The event concluded with a networking reception, providing an opportunity for participants to exchange ideas and strengthen collaboration across sectors.

This engagement marks another step in ECDA’s ongoing efforts to support a more inclusive, skilled, and future-ready semiconductor ecosystem across Europe.

ECDA Showcases Inclusive Innovation at Eindhoven Forum and Consortium Meeting

The European Chips Diversity Alliance continued its momentum this September with a dynamic event at High Tech Campus Eindhoven, followed by its latest consortium meeting. The two-day programme brought together stakeholders from across Europe to explore how diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) can drive innovation and resilience in the semiconductor ecosystem.

The public-facing event, Inclusive Chips Forum – Designing the Difference, hosted by Platform Talent voor Technologie (PTvT), welcomed industry leaders, policymakers, researchers, and students for a full day of dialogue and exchange. Discussions focused on practical approaches to embedding inclusion within organisations, strengthening talent pipelines, and navigating the evolving DEI landscape across Europe.

Key sessions highlighted the role of public-private collaboration, including insights from the Beethoven project on talent attraction and workforce development in the Netherlands. Participants also engaged with ECDA-led initiatives, such as training modules designed to support inclusive practices across the semiconductor value chain.

A panel discussion on DEI backlash brought together voices from industry, policy, and advocacy to explore current challenges and opportunities, while additional sessions showcased best practices, research insights, and real-world approaches to fostering inclusive workplaces.

The forum concluded with a tour of the High Tech Campus Eindhoven, offering participants a first-hand look at one of Europe’s leading innovation hubs and reinforcing the importance of collaboration in driving technological and societal progress.

The following day, ECDA partners gathered for a consortium meeting hosted by PTvT. The session focused on project updates, knowledge sharing, and aligning on next steps to further advance the Alliance’s objectives.
